Active vs Passive Air Purification

Active vs Passive Air Purification

Currently, more than 99% of people breathe air that does not meet WHO air quality standards. Every year, more than 4.2 million people die prematurely due to the effects of air pollution. This makes air pollution the biggest environmental risk in 2023.

Air purification is  important topic, especially in urban areas where air quality is constantly being affected by pollution. There are two main methods of air purification in and around cities: active and passive. In this article, we discuss the differences and benefits of both methods.

Air Purification by Filters

Active air purification is the process by which polluted air is purified using machines. These machines filter the polluted air and then blow out clean air. The biggest advantage of active air purification is the rapid improvement in air quality. Because a high quantity of air is drawn in, a higher level of reduction is achieved in a shorter period. The disadvantage of this method of air purification is that the filters need to be cleaned or replaced regularly, otherwise the reduction will drop drastically. Moreover, it is relatively expensive and the process consumes much more energy than passive air purification.

Air Purification by Airflow

Passive air purification works in a natural way, such as by trees and plants that absorb polluting substances from the air, or by airflow and solar energy which also purify the air. Planting trees is a commonly used method in cities to passively clean the air, this also helps regulate temperature. However, this method requires a lot of maintenance and it takes a long time for trees to mature.

Air Purification with Magnetic Fields

Ionization is another form of passive air purification, where polluted air is purified without the use of filters or other parts. By creating a magnetic field, polluting substances are drawn from the air and neutralized, thus purifying the air and making it (ultra) fine-dust free. The great advantage of ionization is that it is a self-sustaining system that does not require regular maintenance or the replacement of filters. In addition, ionization units are compact and energy-efficient, making them a perfect solution for people looking for a sustainable way to improve air quality in their work or living environment.

Our Systems

StaticAir's systems use ionization to purify the air. This innovative method of air purification requires only 18 watts and no filters. The beauty of this is that the systems continue to work without any reduction in performance over time. This means that this technology provides an efficient and maintenance-friendly solution. Moreover, you save costs and time because filters do not need to be replaced. This way, these systems create a healthy living and working environment while saving energy costs.
